About the St. Regis
Our History
The builder of the St. Regis Apartments in St. Louis, Claude Elliott Vrooman, was inspired by the elegance of the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. He incorporated many decorative and modern engineering features from its Manhattan namesake into his luxury St. Louis building. The building permit for the St. Regis was issued in 1908.
The St. Regis remained as luxury rental accommodations for prominent, well-to-do St. Louisans until 1951, when the tenants were given the option of purchasing their apartments in the building, rather than have it sold to a developer who planned to divide each unit into two units. Thus, each tenant became the owner of one forty-eighth of the building, receiving a share of stock and the right to occupy their own apartment. The ownership structure, known as a cooperative, remains the ownership structure today.

St. Regis Apartments
The St. Regis is comprised of three building wings (4944 Lindell, 4950 Lindell and 4954 Lindell),. Within each wing (court), there are eight floors. Two 2700-square foot apartments are on each floor, with solid concrete between floors, offering privacy, good fire protection and sound proofing. There are a total of 48 apartments.
The original design included three basic floor plans, many of which have been modified over the years through renovations by different owners. Originally featuring three bedrooms and two bathrooms, some units had their floor plans reconfigured to include large walk-in closets, offices, libraries, or additional bathrooms. Most of the apartments continue to feature the original detailed millwork, beautiful hardwood floors, beam ceilings, a 16 x 9 formal entry hall, elegant fireplace, and a large living room with two bay windows. The 8th floor units do not have bay windows, but they do have the capability of having wood-burning fireplaces.
